Maria L.

Maria L. is eagerly looking forward to her 97th birthday on September 8, 2005. She was born in Greenwich Village and was raised in the "roaring 40's"; a term she used to describe locations between 42nd and 50th street in New York City. She enjoyed a thriving, active life in New York and gained fame women's clothing designer specializing in wedding and high fashion formal wear for high end department stores on Fifth Avenue. Maria loved this work and has a natural affinity for art and design; a gift that is still visible in her persona. Her career in New York's fashion industry continued to thrive. In 1940 Maria moved to be near her two sisters and brother living in Los Angeles. The move included a transfer to her company's Beverly Hills store where her specialty was to design sports clothing. Not being her forte, she did not consider this a good career move soon sought other career options.

Maria uses WISE Dial-A-Ride vans for most of her transportation needs and considers the service and staff exemplary and a definite asset to her well being.

Maria contributes a successful career change to an unexpected meeting of her soon to - be husband whom she shortly after arriving in Los Angeles. His proposal, two weeks later was not only surprising, but far too soon for Maria who delayed the 49 year marriage for six months. Theirs was a perfect match of two artistic individuals combining talents in the field of architect design and real estate. The two ventured into other business endeavors with Maria sharing the reins exploring new options and opportunities. She delights in describing her husband's expressions when without notice, she advised him that he was now the owner of a bowling alley.

Maria considers her life a blessing having had a good marriage, two children and now two grandchildren. Golf and tennis was an enjoyable pastime which she shared with her husband prior to his death. Currently, activities outside of family gatherings include church, exercise classes, and volunteering at WISE. She also loves live theatre and participates in our theatre program for WISE clients. Keeping busy, eating right, exercising, and working with people are essential elements for longevity. Maria uses WISE Dial-A-Ride vans for most of her transportation needs and considers the service and staff exemplary and a definite asset to her well being.
