Lillian G.
Lillian is 92 years old. She was born and raised in New York/Manhattan and has two sons. Her family originally moved to California in 1944 because her brother was very ill and her parents thought that the climate here would be better for his health.
Mrs. G has lived in Santa Monica for over 25 years and until recent illness has been a very independent woman. Although her health is deteriorating, she manages to keep herself socially involved as much as possible. She belongs to a group at the Senior Center where she participates in exercises classes, plays lotto, does line dancing when possible and sometimes takes Hebrew study courses. As a widow, she says that she needs that level of socialization. She found out about the Center about four years ago from a friend at an aerobics class that she attended. It is now difficult to participate in any classes, as her vision is virtually gone as a result of Macular Degeneration. Due to this condition, she is unable to read or write and says that she can barely sign her own signature.
The WISE vans are her "life saver".
Several years ago, Lillian's doctor advised her to stop driving. Having used the WISE Transportation vans sporadically in the 1980's and in 1992 she took her doctor's advice and started using the WISE vans on a regular basis in 1999. Where possible, she uses the service for all of her transportation needs. It is critical to her health and well-being. Lillian also suffers from renal disease and needs the life sustaining dialysis treatments three times per week. The WISE vans are her "life saver" as she has no other means of transportation to the Dialysis Center where she receives treatment.
