Harold W.
RSVP Volunteer
Chick Hearn was the voice for the Lakers, while Vince Scully weaves colorful tales for the Dodgers. Since 1985 Harold W. has been the voice of WISE Senior Services. Harold was born in Ohio and moved to Detroit as a young adult. After graduating from high school Harold and his mother opened a delicatessen. In 1944 Harold enlisted in the Army. His restaurant experience caught someone's eye and he spent World War II cooking. On one of his leaves, his brother introduced him to Mildred and this blind date turned into a 57-year marriage.
Like many seniors, retirement was not for Harold; it was boring.
In 1951 Harold was employed as a truck driver delivering
linens and in 1979 he retired. Like many seniors, retirement
was not for Harold; it was boring. His sister-in-law
suggested he move to Maryland where she would keep him
busy in the construction business. In 1985 Harold retired
a second time and decided California was the place for
Mildred and himself. However, Mildred told him he was
"under foot" and to find something to do. During a walk
in Santa Monica Harold spotted the WISE booth asking
for volunteers. What a lucky day for WISE. He admitted
during his interview that he loved talking on the telephone.
In 1985 Harold became the relief switchboard operator.
Harold loves to talk about his three daughters Rhoda, Barbara and Eileen and his three grandchildren Brian and twins Julie and Beth. Harold advises us that he intends to celebrate his 100th birthday at WISE. Expect to hear his voice answering the phones at WISE for another 13 years!
