John Z.

John's mother died three weeks after he was born in 1936. For his first five years, "Johnny" lived on a farm in Monrovia with his grandmother, who raised nine children. John's father was a lawyer, Dean of Loyola Law School and later a Superior Court Judge. He remarried when John was 5 and bought a home in Pasadena where John went to Catholic school, served as an altar boy and played many sports. Later John served in the Navy for a couple of years in the Pacific and then finished college at the University of San Francisco.

After a brief career selling sporting goods, John moved back to Pasadena in 1965 to care for his father who was very ill. John liked working with his hands in the outdoors. Over the years, John built up a very successful landscape company.
