Jean H.
Jean was a real "pioneer" in aviation as she was a specially trained female pilot during World War II.
Jean was born in Iowa in 1917 and got her pilot's license while studying at Iowa State University for a degree in Landscape Architecture. After college, she worked for Better Homes and Gardens as an illustrator in the art department.
Jean was recruited by the Army
Air Forces as a part of a group of female pilots being
trained to ferry planes, releasing male pilots for combat
duty. The women were housed in abandoned army barracks,
given male pilot clothing and were paid $85 per month.
In 1944, Jean married and lived in Southern California. Her husband's first wife had died giving birth to a son and Jean raised that young boy along with the son born to she and her husband in 1947. Jean's husband was killed in a tragic pool accident in 1963.
Jean never remarried. Her youngest son lives in New York and her oldest son is deceased. She is a resident of a facility in Los Angeles County.
