What is a Skilled Nursing Facility (SNF)?

Skilled nursing facilities (commonly referred to as nursing homes) offer the most intensive level of care on the residential care continuum. Most nursing home residents are elderly. Skilled nursing facilities (SNFs) are equipped to handle individuals with 24-hour nursing needs, post-operative recuperation, or complex medical care demands, as well as chronically ill individuals who can no longer live independently. SNFs must be licensed by the state to meet standards of safety, staffing and care procedures.

What is a Residential Care Facility for the Elderly (RCFE)?

Residential care facilities for the elderly (commonly referred to as assisted living facilities or board and cares) are designed for individuals who do not require skilled nursing care, but could benefit from personal care assistance and support services. This type of facility covers a range of living arrangements, from small group homes with shared rooms to luxury private apartments.
