RSVP Volunteer/Fraud Fighter
Esther, a WISE RSVP volunteer, has a great reputation for providing meaningful peer counseling to elderly victims of economic fraud crimes. Esther is a Fraud Fighter. For more than five years, this unique group of volunteers has worked with the FBI, the Postal Inspector, AARP and ATT&T to provide prevention outreach to known victims of telemarketing fraud.
The group received a call from a woman in Beverly Hills who was ready to sign documents to transfer her house to a charitable trust. Esther was asked to be with the woman when two salesmen arrived for the transaction.
The quick, skillful action of one incredible volunteer has helped an elderly woman maintain the only asset she has available for her old age.
On short notice, Esther headed to the home of this recently widowed woman, arriving an hour before the scheduled meeting with the salesmen. She wanted time to get to know the victim, and to work on a story for why she was at this "signing ceremony". Posing as a lifetime friend, she indicated to the two salesmen who arrived that she too might be interested in this type of investment.
Esther reported, "this was one of the most challenging volunteer assignments that I have ever done. The salesmen used incredibility high pressured pitches, and were elusive about details." Esther continued to play innocent and naive, while the two salesmen tried to con her friend out of a lifetime of savings. Esther prevailed and convinced this woman that a second opinion was needed. She gathered the paperwork and passed all the details onto law enforcement.
