Carol

Although Carol was a feisty person and a "survivor" her situation was pretty desperate.

A friend who had been caring for Carol abandoned her. Her apartment was dirty and run down. Because of untreated cataracts Carol was, for all intents and purposes, blind. She had not been to see a doctor in 15 to 20 years. Carol had no income and could not pay rent or buy food. The apartment owner, a very compassionate person, had been allowing Carol to live rent-free for over one year. The apartment manager, who was to become her best friend and caregiver, brought Carol food each day, but Carol was often hungry, because she could not afford to buy adequate food. It was Carol's landlord who brought her to the attention of WISE Care Management.

In one short year Carol's life has improved dramatically.

WISE Care Management helped Carol to obtain Medicare and Medi-Cal benefits. Once these were in place Carol was able to get the medical services she needed. In the ensuing year Carol has had cataract surgery on both eyes. She can now read and enjoys wearing colorful clothing. Soon she will be getting glasses. Carol now sees, on a regular basis, a wonderful geriatrician. Her medical problems are being treated and cared for and her health has improved.

Carol now has SSI and funds to spend on her basic needs. She pays rent and her landlord has painted the apartment and made many repairs. It is now clean and bright. Carol has scoliosis and for many years had been sleeping on a bumpy, lumpy mattress on the floor. A new bed, which she purchased herself, allows her to now sleep comfortably through the night. She and her caregiver get a lot of pleasure going shopping together for clothing at the Salvation Army store. Carol has plenty to eat, in fact she putting on weight, and enjoys taking her caregiver for lunch at Carl's Junior restaurant. Carol takes pride in being able to support herself.

With assistance, Carol is able to continue living, with dignity, independently for the foreseeable future in her own apartment. In one short year Carol's life has improved dramatically.
