WISE Adult Day Center
Still deeply in love after nearly 60 years of marriage,
Alex and Kay come together to the WISE Adult Day Service
Center.
Born in 1916 and 1921, respectively, Alex and Kay
met at the Jewish Center in Detroit, Michigan. But
they were separated when Kay had to move to California
due to her father's lung condition. While Alex was
in the service during World War II, they maintained
contact through letters. Alex proposed, they married
in 1948, and they ran a bowling alley in Detroit.
In 1951, they moved to California, where Alex owned
and managed his own businesses - first a dry cleaner's
on Lincoln Boulevard, then a laundromat in Culver
City. In his 50s, he learned a new trade and started
a home business, "Replacement Draperies &
Window Coverings." It was so successful that
they were able to travel extensively. Kay helped out
with sales, and she volunteered for 16 years at Kaiser
Permanente gift shop. They were blessed with two daughters
and four grandchildren.
A few years ago, Kay's memory started to fail, and
her doctor said she needed 24-hour daily care. Their
daughter, DeeBye, became a full-time caregiver. But
Kay was no longer safe at home, and Alex and DeeBye
needed help caring for her. So, at age 86, Alex retired,
and Alex and Kay enrolled at WISE for five days a
week until they found an assisted living facility.
But three months later, they missed the friendships
and activities at WISE so much that they moved to
another facility in Santa Monica and re-enrolled at
WISE! WISE provides them a place to socialize and
partake in recreational activities. And, of course,
they can be together!
