Santa Monica, June 10, 2004

The Stroke Association of Southern California, in collaboration with WISE Senior Services, is opening an exciting new post-hospital rehabilitation program for stroke survivors and family caregivers in Santa Monica. Including both group and one-on-one sessions, the Stroke Recovery Program will be administered by a licensed occupational therapist and masters level social worker. The program is made possible by generous grants from the Ralph M. Parsons Foundation and the Garfield Family Foundation.
With hospital stays growing shorter and insurance companies cutting back on the amount of rehabilitation they pay for, there is an urgent need in the community for this type of program. The aim is to help stroke survivors maximize their recovery and to provide education, counseling and social support to survivors and family caregivers. The free six month, six hour weekly stroke recovery program will offer physical, speech and cognitive therapy in a group setting. It will include: classes on the psychological aspects of recovery and coping with disability; support group discussions; education about community resources; and private sessions with an occupational therapist and social worker/counselor to identify needs, develop treatment plans and measure progress.
The program will meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 9:00 a.m. 12:00 p.m., beginning July 13. There will also be an Open House for the program from 9:00 - 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, July 13. Pre-registration is required. Call the Stroke Association of Southern California at (310) 575-1699.
